GV Scholars Academy

Grand View University has partnered with GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs) to provide participating students a summer academy experience at no cost to students selected to participate! Applicants must be admitted to Grand View University and attending a Gear Up school district. This 7-day, on campus experience will help prepare you for college, jump start your education with your first college class at Grand View and help you develop relationships with GV faculty, staff and fellow students.

The Academy Includes

  • First-year English or History course, tuition, fees and books
  • Course assignments and projects that relate to current issues
  • Lodging (residence hall) and meals
  • Academic support and course instructors who care about you and want you to succeed
  • Evening and weekend activities where you can have fun and get to know fellow students
  • Field trips that give you first-hand experiences with topics you will discuss in your courses.

How to Apply

Students must apply by July 15 and commit to the entire 7-day academy. Applicants must be admitted to Grand View and be enrolled in a GEAR UP participating school district. Limited to 30 participants.

Gear Up Mentoring Program

All GEAR UP students will be given a personal mentor lasting the entire first year of study. Your mentor will be a current Grand View student who will provide assistance in creating strong academic habits, building your network within the GV community and strengthening your leadership skills. The main goal of the mentor program is to help ensure a successful transition into college life.

Special Gear Up Welcome Reception

All new GEAR UP students to Grand View will also be invited to a special welcome reception where you will meet your student mentors and other key Grand View members.

Gear Up Scholarship

More good news, GEAR UP students will receive a $1,200 GEAR UP Scholarship for the first year of enrollment from the GEAR UP Iowa grant program. If unsure of your eligibility for this scholarship please email gearup @ iowa.gov.
