Colloquium Series | Writing Medieval History Through Business Texts: Charters, Maps, and Recreating Southern France

3/26/20 11:00 AM - 3/26/20 12:00 PM
Location: Rodholm Room | Humphrey Center

Dr. Tom Lecaque, Assistant Professor of History

One of the challenges of studying the past is the uneven nature and location of sources—historians are trained to tell the story of the distant past through documents, usually narrative sources, but the further back you go, the fewer of these you find. In medieval southern France, for example, we lack surviving narrative histories for almost a two century period. Tom will discuss using business documents, known as charters, not only for social or economic history but to recreate the political, cultural, and religious history of southern France in the eleventh century.
